Master’s (MA) degree in Indonesian Studies

(New Concentration in Social Studies Education)

In response to the need for a comprehensive study program that allows both international and domestic students to study about Indonesia, not only from the aspect of language but in a broader sense of Indonesia as a nation-state, Yogyakarta State University opens a new study program of Indonesian Studies in the Master’s (MA) level, that focuses on the following areas:

1. Socio-cultural,
2. Socio-economics, and
3. Socio-political

Prospective students with interests in studying Indonesia in the areas mentioned above can take advantage of our rigorous and yet flexible curriculum to accommodate every student’s needs. In addition to the academic, students will also have the opportunities to study different kinds of arts such as gamelan, dances, shadow-puppets, as well as the famous batik painting, just to mention a few.

Curriculum:

The curriculum of the Indonesian Studies program is designed to help build students’ understanding of Indonesia, its contemporary issues and country’s development that will provide a strong foundation for them in doing research in and about Indonesia, or to become an Indonesianist. The curriculum is divided into three categories:

1. Required courses: consist of 14 credits that are required by the Graduate School of Yogyakarta State University.
2. Selective courses: consist of 15 credits that can be selected from various courses available within the Indonesian Studies program.
3. Elective courses: consist of 12 credits that can be selected from any available courses within the Yogyakarta State University system (study programs) upon the agreement between each of the students and the Graduate School. This flexibility is to accommodate students’ interests and needs that can be varied from one to another.

Language of instruction:

Due to the nature of this program that is intended for international community, the classes will be conducted using English. International students are required to learn Indonesian language to help them immerse in the local community both within the University and beyond.
